Make genuinely crispy garlic dill pickles in your air fryer. This recipe uses a simple coating method to achieve a crunchy texture without deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 jar (16 ounces) dill pickle chips or spears, drained well
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (for extra flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Cooking spray (oil-based)

Instructions

  1. Drain the pickles thoroughly. Pat them completely dry using paper towels. This step is key for crispiness.
  2. Set up a dredging station with three shallow dishes. Place the flour in the first dish.
  3. Whisk the beaten egg in the second dish.
  4. In the third dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, dried dill weed, black pepper, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Working in small batches, dredge each pickle: coat it lightly in flour, dip it into the egg, and press firmly into the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 5 minutes.
  7. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  8. Arrange the coated pickles in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
  9. Lightly spray the tops of the coated pickles with cooking spray.
  10. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping the pickles halfway through the cooking time. Continue spraying lightly with oil during the flip.
  11. The pickles are done when they are golden brown and crisp. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For the best results, chill the breaded pickles on a wire rack in the freezer for 10 minutes before air frying. This helps the coating adhere.
  • If you prefer spears over chips, use thick-cut spears and increase the cook time by 1-2 minutes.
  • For a spicy kick, add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Serve with a simple ranch dressing or a spicy mayonnaise dip.
