Make tender onions with sweet, caramelized edges using your air fryer. This method softens the onion before crisping the exterior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional, for deeper color)

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into thick rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Separate the rings gently.
  2. In a bowl, toss the onion rings with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add brown sugar if using.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Place the seasoned onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Work in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
  5. Air fry for 10 minutes.
  6. Open the basket, shake well, and continue to air fry for another 5 to 10 minutes, checking frequently until the edges are browned and the onions are tender.
  7. Remove from the basket and serve immediately as a side dish or topping.

Notes

  • For a softer interior before air frying, you can briefly steam or blanch the onion rings in boiling water for 2 minutes, then pat them completely dry before oiling and air frying.
  • If you prefer a ‘blooming onion’ texture, keep the onion whole, cut the base, and air fry at a lower temperature (350°F) for longer.
  • Toss with a splash of balsamic vinegar after cooking for extra flavor.
