Ingredients
Scale
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water (for simple syrup)
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4-6 lemons)
4 cups cold water (for mixing)
Ice cubes
Instructions
Make the simple syrup: Combine sugar and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat.
Muddle the blueberries: Place the fresh blueberries in a bowl and gently crush them with a fork or muddler to release the juices.
Combine syrup and berries: Add the crushed blueberries to the warm simple syrup. Let this mixture steep for at least 30 minutes to infuse the flavor.
Strain the syrup: Pour the blueberry simple syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher, pressing down on the solids to extract all the liquid. Discard the solids.
Mix the lemonade: Add the fresh lemon juice and 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.
Taste and adjust: Taste the lemonade. If it is too tart, add a little more sugar or water. If it is too sweet, add a splash more lemon juice.
Serve: Fill glasses with ice and pour the blueberry lemonade over the ice. Garnish with a few fresh blueberries or a lemon slice.
Notes
For a sparkling version, substitute 2 cups of the cold water with club soda or sparkling water when mixing.
To make a larger batch, multiply all ingredient amounts proportionally.
For a deeper color, you can blend the steeped blueberries and strain the mixture through cheesecloth for maximum color extraction.
