A highly flavorful and easy side dish featuring green beans cooked with bacon, brown sugar, and soy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Place the bacon pieces in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until the bacon is crisp. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the rendered bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the brown sugar, soy sauce, water, and garlic powder to the skillet with the bacon grease. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  3. Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet. Stir to coat them evenly with the sauce.
  4. Cover the skillet and cook over medium-low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the green beans are tender-crisp. Stir occasionally.
  5. Remove the lid and continue to cook for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken around the beans.
  6. Remove from heat. Stir in the reserved crisp bacon pieces. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a slightly less sweet version, reduce the brown sugar to 1/3 cup.
  • You can substitute smoked turkey bacon for regular bacon if you prefer.
  • If you do not have a large skillet, you can cook the beans in batches after reducing the sauce.
