Make exceptionally crispy tofu bites using your air fryer. This recipe uses cornstarch for a crunchy exterior perfect for snacks or salads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray (or 1 teaspoon neutral oil)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess water. Wrap the block in paper towels or a clean cloth and place a heavy object on top.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes or bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  4. Add the tofu pieces to the bowl and gently toss until every piece is evenly coated with the marinade and starch mixture.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with oil.
  7. Arrange the tofu bites in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
  8. Air fry for 10 to 14 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the tofu is golden brown and very crispy.
  9. Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, let the coated tofu sit for 5 minutes before placing it in the air fryer.
  • If you prefer a slightly drier coating, you can skip the liquid marinade and toss the pressed, cubed tofu directly with the dry ingredients (cornstarch, spices). Then, lightly spritz with oil before air frying.
  • This recipe works well with arrowroot powder instead of cornstarch.
