Prepare this simple, flavorful tilapia dish entirely on one pan. The fish cooks quickly in a rich, creamy garlic butter sauce alongside tender asparagus for an easy weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (6 ounce) tilapia fillets
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup.
  2. Place the trimmed asparagus on one side of the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat.
  3. Pat the tilapia fillets dry with paper towels and place them on the other side of the baking sheet. Season the fish lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  5. Reduce the heat to low. Whisk in the heavy cream and lemon juice. Let it warm through for 1 minute.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  7. Pour the creamy garlic butter sauce evenly over the tilapia fillets, making sure to cover the tops.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tilapia is opaque and flakes easily with a fork and the asparagus is tender-crisp. Cooking time depends on the thickness of your fillets.
  9. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving immediately.

Notes

  • To prevent the sauce from separating, keep the heat low when adding the cream and cheese. Do not boil the sauce once the cream is added.
  • If your tilapia fillets are very thin, reduce the cooking time by 2-3 minutes.
  • You can substitute broccoli florets or green beans for the asparagus. Adjust cooking time if using denser vegetables.
