Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Carefully spoon or pipe the batter into the hot oil in small, circular or freeform shapes. Work in batches, do not overcrowd the pan.
  6. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Dust generously with powdered sugar while still warm.

Notes

  • For easier piping, you can place the batter in a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for even cooking.
  • These are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for a day.
