Ingredients
Scale
3 scoops vanilla ice cream
1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Whipped cream for topping
1 maraschino cherry
Instructions
Prepare the strawberry sauce: Combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the strawberries soften slightly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Do not overcook; you want some texture remaining.
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Let the sauce cool slightly.
Place three scoops of vanilla ice cream into a tall sundae glass or bowl.
Spoon the warm or room-temperature strawberry sauce generously over the ice cream scoops.
Top the sundae with a dollop of whipped cream.
Place one maraschino cherry on top of the whipped cream to finish.
Notes
For a thicker sauce, mash some of the strawberries against the side of the pan while cooking.
If you prefer a colder topping immediately, chill the sauce completely before assembling the sundae.
Substitute the vanilla ice cream with strawberry or coffee ice cream for a different flavor profile.
