A standard recipe for making smooth, fluffy cream cheese frosting suitable for cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened cream cheese and butter together in a large bowl using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until incorporated. Increase the speed to medium and beat until smooth.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt. Beat on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. Do not overmix once fully combined.
  4. If the frosting is too soft, chill it for 15 to 30 minutes before using. If it is too stiff, add a teaspoon of milk or heavy cream until the desired consistency is reached.

Notes

  • Use full-fat cream cheese and butter for the best texture. Ensure both are at room temperature before starting.
  • For piping, chill the finished frosting for 30 minutes to firm it up slightly.
  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring to room temperature and briefly beat before reusing.
